I’m in the market for a new truck, but I need some advice from a dealer..?

Posted on June 2nd, 2010 by admin

ok, I want to buy a new truck and I’m not sure how to go about it.. I want to take advantage of the Cash-For Clunkers incentive and also use my Dads GM discount. So, here is what I am thinking:

1- $4500 Cash for clunkers
2- GM Discount
3- Dealer incentives/other GM discount
4- My Dad has a $2000 voucher toward a new vehicle

with all of these incentives, I think I should get a sweet deal on a new truck. However, what other kinds of negotiation do I have with a dealer? What else can I do to make my purchase even more attractive?

I realize that times are tough for the dealers, but that doesnt mean that I dont want to take advantage of the situation… What else can I do/negotiatie/sweeten the pot?

Thanks for your input…

By the way.. I know the cash4clunk isnt in play yet and I’ll be trading in a 97 exporer with a v8 so I think I can qualify for the $4500 incentive…

Yeah that is nice. It will for sure add up quickly in getting a bargain. But know this, that $2K voucher your dad holds is for the holder of the GM credit card. He would have to be co-owner of your car to cash it in. Don’t believe me you say? Try it.

cash for clunkers question?

Posted on May 31st, 2010 by admin

if i have an old chevy truck that is eligible to be traded in for 4500 or 3500 dollars, i wasnt sure if i could trade it in and get a honda civic.
in the articles i have been reading it sounds like i would have to get another truck to get the voucher.
is this true? or can i get the civic

The government has set up an official website to help Dealers (who will be administrating the rebates) and consumers answer all the confusing qualifications and handle all the "red tape"
According to the site, you can trade a truck for a car.
The truck will have to meet certain qualifications though.
Please visit the official site to determine if your vehicle qualifies.

Cash For Clunkers, Should I?

Posted on May 28th, 2010 by admin

The Government has just passed a new bill called Cash For Clunkers that will give someone with an older vehicle that gets low gas mileage anywhere from $3500 to $4500 in the form of a government voucher if they buy a new car and turn in their old car to be destroyed.

I currently drive a 1992 Chevy Astro van that has had its moments of braking down, luckily my father was a professional mechanic so we have fixed everything on it. For being 17 years old the van is in amazing condition. But how long will it last? I am currently going to a community college, and will eventually transfer to a 4 year. My question is, should I give up my van to take benefit of this program and get a new car? I could not otherwise afford a car if it wasn’t for this government incentive. I would try to pay the car off before I go to a 4 year.

At the same time, my van is in excellent shape, and minor repairs are nothing compared to a car payment. But who is to say it wont blow the tyranny or engine? I just replaced the brake system and got new tires, total cost for both was $1600 bucks. If I had a mechanic do the work it would easily have cost twice that. A few years before I replaced the steering gear, motor mounts and AC unit. So again, if it were not for my father and what he has taught me, this van would have given anyone else a headache.

If I got rid of my van, i was thinking of buying a Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. Should I? Or should I hang on to my van as long as I can, until something major blows and I would have no choice but to get rid of it. It has had no engine problems at all, just the stuff hooked to it haha.

To be honest with you, That van is going to cause you a lot of problems. I have known many people with them in that 15- 20 year range and they have all ended up with a major problem and ended up being scrapped. For your own convenience I suggest you take advantage of this offer now before you have no choice but to do it.

Is this some of the crazy things that Obama and his Far Left Loons in Congress are coming up with?

Posted on May 25th, 2010 by admin

With news that Congress has passed its ballyhooed $1 billion “Cash for Clunkers” bill, we feel compelled to voice our skepticism about the program. Here’s the bill in a nutshell: Buyers of new vehicles between July 1 and November 1 will be given a voucher for $3500 if they forfeit a post-1984 car or truck that has been registered for at least one year and has a combined fuel economy rating at least 4 mpg lower than their new vehicle. The voucher grows to $4500 if the increase in fuel economy is 10 mpg or higher. The old car or truck is then crushed and recycled.

Here are five reasons we don’t think this program is worth the time it took to draft it, let alone a billion dollars:

1. The voucher replaces the trade-in deal you might otherwise get from the dealership; it’s not in addition to the car’s private sale or trade-in value. In other words, if you’re trading in a car that’s worth $3000, your net gain is only $500. Although if your car is worth $100, CFC couldn’t come at a better time.

2. We’re not sure how many folks driving cars worth $3500 or less are in the market for a new car in the first place. Sure, there’s the occasional fresh-out-of-college new-hire (we’re not sure who’s hiring right now, but we’ll play make-believe) that might still be ready to move from a Dodge Omni to a shiny new Honda Insight, but people driving cheap old beaters are probably doing so because they can’t afford a new car. And $3500 doesn’t go far when the average transaction price of new cars hovers around $24K. The vouchers don’t apply toward the purchase of used cars, for which the majority of old beaters are traded in.

3. People driving large, gas-gulping old cars and trucks often do so because they need the utility those vehicles provide. Old station wagons, for example, have few modern counterparts that are as versatile while achieving better fuel economy. Ditto pickups, which have gotten bigger and more capable but not much more fuel-efficient. And if the government thinks that someone is going to step out of a 1994 Dodge Ram into a Honda Fit, they need to get out of D.C. a little more often.

4. Naturally, we have some reservations about any bill designed to facilitate wiping out—we’re sorry, recycling—any automotive species. And let’s face it, while there are a lot of bona fide clunkers out there, we’re afraid that a bunch of future classics will get caught in this roundup. We propose, then, that a certified auto enthusiast (paid, of course) be placed at all certified CFC dealerships to screen the cars that are brought in, returning the cool cars—including anything with T-tops—to the streets.

5. Besides cleansing the U.S. of gas-guzzling pigs, the other supposed benefit of the CFC program is to provide a short-term boost to the starving auto business. However, we hope these legislators don’t expect it to meaningfully help the domestic automakers. Many of the automobiles with fuel-economy ratings high enough to qualify for the vouchers come from Japan and Korea.

On the bright side, the cost to taxpayers will be minimal when no one actually participates.

They’re running all sorts of legislation through that’s going to destroy our country.

Hey, you young lowlife punk, Synth, if you don’t like people’s opinions, get off this forum. That’s all it is, is people’s opinions, you idiot.

Cash for Clunkers Details?

Posted on May 22nd, 2010 by admin

I’m hoping this Cash for Clunkers bill is passed, because I have an 02 Isuzu Rodeo that gets a combined 17 mpg that i would love to trade in for something better on gas. I understand the details pretty well except for one thing:
Is the 3500 or $4500 voucher how much you get for the car or is that added to your car’s trade-in value?

Thanks!

It is the maximum you would get for your trade-in.
They don’t add it to what your car is worth.

It won’t help anyone who has a car worth more than $4500. Hence the word, ‘clunkers’.

If your car is in good shape and low enough miles, you could probably get $3500-$4500 for your Rodeo now. If that is the case, this bill doesn’t do anything for you.

What it could do is open up a black market for crappy cars. For example, my dad has a 1993 Jeep Cherokee worth $1,000. If this bill passes it is now worth $4500 if he bought a new car.
If someone wanted to buy a new car, my Dad could sell it to a private party for $2500 and they could trade it in to get $4500.

Once CARS paperwork is submitted, how & when does the consumer know the voucher is approved?

Posted on May 19th, 2010 by admin

Dealers wants me to pay $4500 if govt doesn’t pay…so how do I know I really got the approved voucher and deal is done?
Govt Rules dont tell you how consumer finds out if voucher is approved..dealership tells us they don’t know till funds are wired to their account
Cash for Clunkers
CARS Program
C4C
3 days out from the transaction…dealership does not know if approval has been granted. Documents have been submitted. I called our congressman who is working on an answer to my question. Unfortunately, there is no answers available on the CARS Program hotline or through their legal council…only automated dead-end lines.

Here are the rules: www.cashforclunkers.org

In the "Cash for Clunkers" program, do I have to purchase a brand-new vehicle?

Posted on May 12th, 2010 by admin

Cash for Clunkers looks like it’s going to be signed into law. Basically, if one has a car that is old, and gets less than 18 mpg’s they can scrap it and get $3500-$4500 voucher towards a more fuel-efficient vehicle. However, I do not know if it has to be a brand new car, or just one that is more fuel efficient. Does anyone know?

From Edmunds.com:

>>>Will it apply to used-car purchases? The final details of the bill are not yet available. However, it has always been assumed that the vouchers will only apply to new car purchases. <<<

$4,500 voucher for fuel-efficient cars?

Posted on May 10th, 2010 by admin

Okay. I was planning on not spending my money and just fixing the car I have now. However I heard about this 4500 voucher for a fuel efficient car. Which now, makes me want to take advantage of this offer and actually go out and buy one while they are cheap.

How does this work? I have a 2001 ford escort ZX2 2dr Coupe….can I trade that in for Toyota Yaris? Does it have to be the same brand? Is there a catch to this?

nope..it has to be an old car that uses LESS than 18 mpg…your 2001 does not qualify.

what are the rules about qualifying for the (up to) 4500.00 gas guzzler rebate voucher?

Posted on May 7th, 2010 by admin

The House on Tuesday approved a "cash for clunkers" bill that aims to boost new auto sales by allowing consumers to turn in their gas-guzzling cars and trucks for vouchers worth up to $4,500 toward more fuel-efficient vehicles.

President Barack Obama has encouraged Congress to approve consumer incentives for new car purchases as part of the government’s work to restructure General Motors and Chrysler. The House approved the bill 298-119.

Supporters pushed for the measure to stimulate car sales and increase the fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles on the nation’s highways. The auto industry has sought the incentives after months of poor auto sales. In May, overall sales were 34 percent lower than a year ago.

"Stimulating sales is the only way to get the auto industry back on its feet," said Rep. Donald Manzullo, R-Ill.

General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC have received billions of dollars in government aid and the entire auto industry has watched car sales plummet during the past year. In May, overall sales were 34 percent lower than a year ago.

"Our industry has been stuck in neutral and really has not started to move," said Larry Kull, president of Marlton, N.J.-based Burns Kull Automotive Group, which includes General Motors, Honda and Toyota dealerships.

The vehicle scrappage bill has been under negotiations for months as lawmakers try to find a solution that boosts car sales while providing some environmental benefits. Proponents have pointed to similar programs in Europe that have enhanced auto sales.

Opponents said the bill failed to include incentives for used vehicles and represented an artificial incentive for the industry.

"It’s defying the laws of economics and saying we can manufacture enough of a demand to keep the auto industry afloat," said Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz.

Separately, House and Senate appropriators were discussing providing $1 billion to a supplemental war funding bill for the "cash for clunkers" program, which aims to generate about 1 million new auto sales. Since the yearlong vehicle program is expected to cost $4 billion, lawmakers would attempt to find the additional money later this year.

Under the House bill, car owners could get a voucher worth $3,500 if they traded in a vehicle getting 18 miles per gallon or less for one getting at least 22 miles per gallon. The value of the voucher would grow to $4,500 if the mileage of the new car is 10 mpg higher than the old vehicle. The miles per gallon figures are listed on the window sticker.

Owners of sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks or minivans that get 18 mpg or less could receive a voucher for $3,500 if their new truck or SUV is at least 2 mpg higher than their old vehicle. The voucher would increase to $4,500 if the mileage of the new truck or SUV is at least 5 mpg higher than the older vehicle. Consumers could also receive vouchers for leased vehicles.

Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Ohio, the bill’s chief sponsor, said the bill showed that "the multiple goals of helping consumers purchase more fuel efficient vehicles, improving our environment and boosting auto sales can be achieved." Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., has backed a similar version in the Senate, which has the support of automakers and their unions.

The bill would direct dealers to ensure that the older vehicles are crushed or shredded to get the clunkers off the road. It was intended to help replace older vehicles — built in model year 1984 or later — and would not make financial sense for consumers owning an older car with a trade-in value greater than $3,500 or $4,500.

The U.S. industry is expected to generate about 9.5 million vehicles sales in 2009, compared to more than 13 million in 2008 and more than 16 million in 2007.

Auto analysts questioned whether it would be enough of an incentive for many consumers burdened by debt or financially stressed by the troubled economy.

"That is the major sticking point for Americans: How do you finance your vehicle? How do you pay for it?" said Rebecca Lindland, an auto industry analyst for the consulting firm IHS Global Insight.

A group of senators led by California Democrat Dianne Feinstein were pushing an alternative version that would require consumers to trade up for more fuel-efficient cars and trucks to qualify. They complained that even a 2009 Hummer H3T, which gets 14 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg on the highway, could qualify for the incentives under the House bill.

Under Feinstein’s plan, a passenger car owner’s trade-in would need to get 17 mpg or less to qualify and only new passenger cars getting at least 24 mpg would be eligible. Owners could receive a $2,500 voucher for a new car that gets at least 7 mpg more than their old car. The voucher would increase to $3,500 for new cars with a 10 mpg improvement and $4,500 for new cars with a 13 mpg increase in fuel efficiency
